Book Reviews

“All gardeners strive for it…a garden of continuous bloom…from the first snowdrop in spring to the last gasp of whatever flower lingers on as winter approaches. Few of us achieve it. A Recipe for Continuous Bloom by Lorraine Roberts tells us how to choose perennials for a garden bursting with colour throughout the seasons. What Makes this Book Unique? The strength of this book lies in its organization. It “feels” like a catalog. Logically organized, it is simple to navigate making it easy for gardeners to choose the best plants to ensure colour throughout the seasons. The large photos printed on high quality, glossy paper makes that selection all the more enjoyable.
Not text-intensive, Roberts takes up only two pages at the beginning of the book to offer her “recipe” for continual bloom in the garden. It is succinct, but gets the job done. The rest of the book is divided into three sections. Two sections are devoted to growing conditions, Full Sun/Part Shade and Full Shade/Part Shade. They are further subdivided by bloom times starting with March/April and ending with September/October. Within these sections each perennial (287 in all) has its own page featuring a full colour photograph along with the plant’s height, width and zone hardiness. The third section is a Plant Guide suggesting various lists of perennials for specific purposes, for example, plants that attract butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial insects, deer-resistant perennials and more. ”

“About the Book: Continuous bloom in the perennial garden is achievable with the right plant choices and this book is your guide to getting there. The month-by-month format helps to plan, and fill the voids in your garden. There are 287 individual perennials featured – each with its own page and beautiful colour photograph. Included is information on the growing zone, length of bloom, height, width, light, and soil. There are separate sun and shade sections with the appropriate icon for each perennial.
Artistically compiled and easy to use. A Recipe for Continuous Bloom was created to provide a starting point to build a backyard oasis of continuous bloom. Perennials that are hardy to Zones 3, 4, and 5 have been chosen. The plant choices are limitless and there will always be a new plant or hybrid, but Lorraine has recommended hardy perennials that she has grown organically in the display gardens at Plant Paradise Country Gardens.”

“Lorraine’s recipe for readers who want continuous bloom is simple and easy to follow: she gives them a visual guidebook that shows, month by month, what is in bloom in the perennial garden. There is one section for full-sun and part-sun plants; and one for full-shade plants.
This is a book for gardeners and would-be gardeners who don’t want to be bogged down by the history of plants. The book gives the plant name, height, width, and zone. And that’s the beauty of it—it’s perfect for those who want to see what plants are in bloom when, so they can stage their perennial garden and enjoy continuous bloom.”

“Continuous blooms are what every gardener strives to produce throughout our frustratingly short growing season, but no matter how carefully you plant, precious weeks may go by without a flower of interest brightening your plot. Thankfully, Lorraine Roberts – co-owner and operator with her husband Robert of Caledon’s Plant Paradise Country Gardens – has come to our rescue. Gorgeous photography accompanies her recommendations, as well as information about which species attract birds and butterflies, resist hungry deer, are drought tolerant and have eye-catching foliage. Best of all, this guide is specific to the tricky Ontario climate and is ideal for use in the Headwaters area”.

“The easiest way to ensure a continuously blooming perennial garden, from the earliest spring until fall, is to buy a copy of this book. Thank you, Lorraine Roberts, for making it so easy for new gardeners to create continuous flowering gardens, in temperate and colder climates. Before the publication of this manual, whenever neophyte gardeners wanted to create three-season flowerbeds, they were compelled to muddle through encyclopedic photo-lists of plants. The publishing concept for A Recipe for Continuous Bloom is brilliant in its simplicity. The plants are portrayed with such attention to detail, that new gardeners, who have not yet established their favorites, might fall in love with all of them. It is a tribute to Ms. Roberts’ photographic talent, for painstakingly showcasing her selection of perennials so that each one becomes an object of desire.”
